Will luxury vinyl flooring expand?

Will luxury vinyl flooring expand?

Yes, it will. And it will also shrink.

That is because it has microscopic holes that circulate air. So when the air is humid, it will expand; alternatively, it will shrink when the air is dry.

Easy enough to prevent

All you have to do is acclimate the luxury vinyl tile or vinyl plank pieces. Acclimation will enable the flooring to get used to its new environment. For example, the product could be stored at a very different temperature than your home.

Have the product delivered several days before installation. Then, lay the pieces side-by-side in the room where they will be installed.

Acclimation is done for 48-72 hours. The room should be climate controlled, without excessive air conditioning or heat.

What happens if you don’t acclimate?

If installed correctly, this vinyl will last over 20 years. However, without acclimation, the floor will buckle or gap.

Luxury vinyl plank or tile is commonly installed as a floating floor. Unfortunately, the most minute movement will throw the floor off balance and wreak havoc with the clicking mechanism.

You might also void your warranty. Most manufacturers now reacquire acclimation. If not done, all protections are lost.
